Bronze Eagle statue commemorating servicemen who lost their lives in the Atlantic Ocean. Battery Park, Lower Manhattan, New York
The monumental eagle statue at the East Coast Memorial in the southern part of Battery Park, facing the Statue of Liberty across the harbor/harbour, and dedicated to more than 4600 servicemen who lost their lives in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. It was commissioned by the federal American Battle Monuments Commission, designed by Gehron and Seltzer, and consists of a large paved plaza punctuated by eight massive gray/grey granite pylons on which are inscribed the names, rank, organization, and state of the deceased. In the eastern portion of the plaza a monumental bronze eagle, sculpted by Albino Manca, grips a laurel wreath in its talons, signifying official mourning of those lost at sea. The memorial was dedicated by President John F. Kennedy on May 23 1963.
