Otitis media infection. Close-up of pus (yellow) in the ear of a five-month-old boy with secretory otitis media. This is a chronic accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, which can cause hearing loss (glue ear). It is usually caused by the spread of an infection of the upper respiratory tract through the eustachian tube, the canal linking the middle ear to the throat. Otitis media usually responds well to treatment with antibiotic drugs and occasionally requires surgical drainage.
