One remark cannot be dis-puted : that there are numerous ivory carvings existing, of the fourteenthand fifteenth centuries, which it is quite impossible to refer with absolutecertainty either to the English or the French school. In some instanceswe have a guide if we can trace their pedigree, or know from whence theywere obtained; about others we may have a known history. But wherethese evidences fail, we must be content to remain in doubt. This mirror case is quite as charming in design and as good inexec
