His mother afterward metwith financial reverses and found it very diffi-cult to provide for her children, of whom Ja-cob is the eldest. She then found it necessaryto do laundry work in order to keep the lardersupplied. She received able and willing as-sistance, however, from her son Jacob, whodid chores for Mi-. At one time the school board passeda rule that children having no books should beprohibited from attending school. A kindfriend, knowing that Mr. Frey had to leaveschool because of the measure passed, told him to get what I ks he i led,and if ever able to pay him hack he could do so. The years passedand Mr. Frey. because of his unflagging indus-try and perseverance, prospered and long sincehe has discharged the indebtedness to his bene-factor and also assisted him at a time whenbusiness difficulties pressed him hard. Thisinstance is another proof of the old saying thatbread east upon the waters will return aftermany days. Mr. Frey was very desirous ofobtaining an education, realizing its value as apreparation for lifes practical and responsibleduties and after leaving public schools he andthree other young men emp
