Ooe-diah Gore and his brother, blacksmiths, fromConnecticut, were the first to make use of an-thracite coal in the Wyoming (Ia.) valley in1768. Judge Jesse Fell, of Wilkesbarre, wasthe first to apply it to household uses. PhilipGinter, a hunter in the Mauch Chunk region,discovered the Lehigh coal in 1791. Mineswere opened in 1793, but it was ten years laterbefore coal was shipped to Philadelphia.
