The Bass Rock is an island in the Firth of Forth two miles east of North Berwick and one mile off the mainland A huge trachyte volcanic plug of phonolite dating to the Carboniferous period rising over 100m from the sea The island has a 20m lighthouse built in 1902 by David Stevenson. Half way up the island stands the ruin of St Baldred s Chapel. The Bass Rock is a Site of Special Scientific Interest famous for its Gannet colony This picture was taken as the golden Scottish sun caught the island at the end of a still winter day.
