Museum was founded by Ivan Zabelin and Aleksey Uvarov in 1872. The structure is based on Neo-Russian design by Vladimir Osipovich Shervud. In 1995 the equestrian statue of Marshal Zhukov by Vyacheslav Klykov was unveiled, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Moscow Victory Parade
