The former Woodvale Silk Spinning Mill, viewed from Wellhome Park to the east of the Clifton Beck., Brighouse, West Yorkshire, in 1982. The mill was opened 29 April 1882 by Brighouse businessman, Richard Kershaw, on land bought from the Wellholme Estate in 1876, James Burrow and Robert Newton, from Lancaster, introducing the silk industry to Brighouse in 1843. The Woodvale Mill employed 700 workers in 1895. In 1903 it was bought by Ormerod Brothers Ltd and the mill was known as 'Ormerod's' by local people during the 20th Century. The mill closed in 1984 and was designated a Grade 2 Listed Building. Damaged by fire (a reported arson attack by a 13-year-old boy) in December 1985, the mill was demolished in 1986. Behind it, to the right, is the Woodvale Cotton Spinning Mill. This, badly damaged in the fire, was also demolished. Only a few small buildings of the mill complex survived. The site is now occupied by the Woodvale Business Park.
