A\e wish all crippling, blighting, andparalyzing influences to fall upon the vile trafhc in intoxicating liquors,above and below, east, west, north, and south, always and every-where. We would restrain it, not only on Sunday, but on every dayof the Mountain Horse trader COMING EVENTS CAST SHADOWS BEFORE 255 So, too, we are in favor of a divorce reform, prison reforms, allsanitary reforms, labor reform as against the encroachments ofmonopolies, reforms to restrain vivisection, and cruelty to childrenand to animals, and to prevent the circulation of vile, blasphemous, orobscene matter through the mails. We wish the latter reformmight be extended also to include the publication and circulation, inany manner, of the dime novel curse and abomination. Let thelaw which is designed to be a safeguard to society, take hold of allthese things, we care not how extensively and rigidly. But with these things our friends are unfortunately connectinganother enterprise as a reform, which lacks the true basis of allreforms; namely, the divine sanction. They labor to secure theenforcement by law of a day as the Sabbath which the Scripturesnowhere declare to be the Sabbath, in opposition to the day whichthey do explicitly declare to be the Sabbath.
