He leftScotland for Utah in January, 1851, ac-companied by his mother and her fami-ly, and crossed the Atlantic in the shipGeorge W. Bourne, which sailed fromLiverpool to New Orleans; and aftertwo years detention in Cincinnati,Ohio, in consequence of the sicknessand death of his eldest sister, he ar-rived in Salt Lake City in 1853, andsettled over Jordan. In 1855 he en-tered the service of the Trustee-in-. Trust of the Church as bookkeeper, wasappointed chief clerk in May, 1857, andretained the office till December, excellent business capacity of Da-vid O. Calder was early recognized byPres. Brigham Young, whose knowl-edge of men is proverbial; and thePresidents confidence in his integritywas equal to his estimate of the abili-ty of his chief clerk. While in theservice of the Trustee-in-Trust he or-ganized the entire system of accountsand records in all the departments ofthe Church.
