This 1895 illustration by American sculptor Frederic Remington shows a Zouave officer in Algiers. The title Zouave was given to certain infantry regiments in the French army that usually served in French North Africa between 1831 and 1962. This image accompanied an article titled "French Fighters in Africa" by Poultney Bigelow that appeared in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in February 1895. Remington served as a journal correspondent in Algiers in the early 1890s.
