Royal Earslwood Park, Redhill, Surrey, on an early summer morning

Royal Earlswood Park, now a prestigious property development, used to be the Royal Earlswood Hospital. known as " Earlswood Asylum for Idiots and Imbeciles". Built from 1853 to 1855 by William Bonython Moffat, the architect and partner of Sir George Gilbert Scott, it used to be a large psychiatric hospital. Earlswood is south of the Surrey town Redhill, in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead, close to the London to Brighton railway In 1997, the hospital closed, and the building was converted into apartments. The photo was taken in the early morning of a summers day in 2010, with the first rays of sunlight illuminating the red brick structure, whilst morning mist still covers the wooded area behind.
