The order was executed byMiss Jane Bidney, who placed the differentsprays in the hands of workers in and aroundthe little village of Beer, in South Devon. Thelace cost ^1,000. The patterns were immedi-ately destroyed when the lace was complete, butfragments of some of the sprigs are treasuredin cottages here and there in the neighbour-hood. In examining such specimens the workis seen to be of great beauty. Honiton Application is chiefly made now byworking the sprays on the pillow, and applyingthem on to a machine-made net. (Furtherdetails are given under Honiton Lace.) bobbins, and then applying them. Honiton Bobbin-made Lace centre stitch, called Dia-mond Plaiting-s, is made afterthe other parts of the sprayhave been worked. The leavesare in cloth stitch and halfstitch with pearl edge; thestem is in stem stitch with plainpearl edge. Nineteenth century. Honiton Crochet. Honiton has been the centre of the lace trade since the days of QueenElizabeth, when coarse bobbin or bone laces were made—plaited laces of silk, goldor silver threads, like the Italian and Greek Reticellas. The lace-makers werereinforced by the Flemings who took refuge in Devonshire from religious persecu-tion during the sixteenth century, and traces are still to be found of Flemish namesamongst the lace-making families, such as Stocker,
