During this periodapproximately 3,500,000 cars have used the track, or atonnage approximating 140,000,000. 482 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL [Vol. XLVIII, No. 12 The tracks on the Market Street elevated line imme-diately to the west of the subway were laid at the sametime with precisely the same type of rail and similarjoint plates. The elevated construction consists of6-in. x 8-in. x 8-ft. ties on stone ballast with a depth of5 in. to 8 in. beneath the ties. The rail on the elevatedstructure was in such condition in 1912 as to demandrenewal throughout the entire section between Twenty-ninth and Sixty-third Streets. This was done late in1912 and early in 1913, after a life of six years, andduring 1912 and 1913 the greater part of the ties werelikewise renewed. As there is no ballasted construction on any of thesubway tracks in this city, the nearest approach to acomparison of maintenance cost between the subwaytype of construction and the ballasted type is a com-. parison of the subway with the section of the elevatedabove noted, both sections having been subjected to pre-cisely the same amount of traffic. They are constructedwith rail of the same weight and quality, and the sametype of joint plates and method of fastening rails toties. An analysis of the expenditures running throughseveral years, after eliminating such charges as wouldbe common to any type of construction, indicates amaintenance cost for the subway track of about one-half that of the ballasted track, or approximately $528per mile per year for the subway track as against $1,056for the elevated ballasted track. The initial cost of concrete construction is estimatedat $44,352 per mile, and the ballasted construction$24,288 per mile. In the ballasted construction the cost
