Strata, till and soil near Penrhyn Mawr, Anglesey, three layers showing geology for 600 million years

The lower level is metamorphosed stratified rock from the ocean bed around 600 million years ago, this would originally have been horizontal but the movement of the earths crust had forced it to a near vertical position, on top there is a glacial deposit of different sized stones of different origins some moved many miles by ice until being left when the ice melted, then there is soil with an organic content built up over the years with rotting vegetation and other matter since the last ice age.
