To save the time, labor andexpense of developing a new corliss engine, it decided tobuy a good one outright, and accordingly purchased thebusiness of a firm in Sioux City which was manufacturingengines under many disadvantages owing to the remotenessof the works from its sources of material and fuel. These. CORLISS ENGINE—MURRAY IRON WORKS. disadvantages do not exist in Burlington, situated as it is inthe midst of coal mines and on the Mississippi river, withlow freight rates from iron furnaces and steel mills of thesouth and east. This engine, known as the Sioux City Corliss, has earnedan enviable reputation for its regulation and economy aswell as for its excellent design. The Murray Iron WorksCompany secured the drawings, patterns, good will andeven the experience of the old builders, for with the enginethey secured the best of the men who had been building new shop was built at Burlington, adjoining the old one,and has been in operation for six months, turning out manycorliss engines, both simple and compound. Having facilities for building both engines and boilers,and supplying complete power plants, the Murray IronWorks Company will make a specialty of street railwayplants. Numerous inquiries are reported and a good trade isconfidently expected. The
