Ephraim Kanoe, male, aged 30, native of Hawaii. His father is now seventy years old, and. strong ; his mother, 46 years of age; she is supposed to have had syphilis; she had nine children, Eph. being the oldest. When young he had sores upon his body. At 16 or 18 he had syphilis (buboes are meant probably). In 1871 he had for several months discharge of bloody excrement-(dysentery), and had a red spot on his right arm which was anaesthetic. In 1873 all the arm was red. In 1874 this was cold and hot by turns. Soon covered with bad sores. In 1876 redness appeared on his face; at the end of same year all his body was black colored, and in 1877 he was sent to Kalawao. His present condition is the same as when photographed, a little weaker, but he continues to move about. Whole skin leper-colored, but clean. Vaccinated in 1853 by a physician. Committee report contains following: Kanoe Eparaima, a man, 30 years of age, and about two years at Kalawao.
