He was awarded a gold medaland diploma for his valve gear at theParis Exposition in 1878, and another atthe Exhibition in Antwerp in 1883. Thefirst locomotive equipped with Wal-schaerts valve gear was No. 98, of theBelgian State Railways, and ran from theshops at Malines to Brussels on Sept. 2,1848. It may be remarkedthat at the time that Walschaerts valvegear appeared, the Sharp valve gear, hav-ing two eccentric rods with forked ends,was the only kind in use.
