Woman of Polet, Dieppe, dressed for a festival.

Woman of Polet, Dieppe, dressed for a festival. The simple headdress is difficult to reconcile with the decoration of the clothes - the silk casaquin (waistcoat), the day mitaines (mittens) and bracelets. These clothes are worn for the grandest occasions by the sailors of Polet, and date back to the 14th century. On the beach can be seen a bathing hut and a bather. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
