The three brigade groups had been bivouacked on the nightbefore the attack in areas along the several roads by which thetroops were to march to the assembly line. A thick autumnalfog hung over the whole battlefield on the morning of the 29th andthis was intensified by the smoke used by the artillery and aero-planes. We will trace separately the events of the 29th of Septemberon the 8th and 15th Brigade sectors, commencing w^th the former. The 8th Brigade attacked
