Put on the horse the trotting-rig, as seen in engraving, with the exception of the standing martingale attached from the pulley to the bit- ring of the bridle; then through the eye of the pulley insert a small cord, say twelve feet long, carry both ends up between the fore-legs, pass one end through the bit-ring on the oflf-side up over the head, and down on the nigh-side of the head to the bit-ring, and then tie it.
