A series of early X-ray tubes, shown in the accompanyingplate, was reproduced in Nature in 1897, from the Frenchjournal La Nature. In tubes of later date the anode was in some cases cooledby means of a water jacket, while in other types the sameresult was obtained by the insertion of a pair of relativelybulky metal tongs into a metal tube, which terminated inthe anode of the X-ray bulb.
