Milky Way stars and nebulae. The two bright stars at top are Alpha Centauri (third-brightest star in the night sky) and Beta Centauri. Below these is the dark Coalsack nebula and the constellation Crux (the Southern Cross). Gamma Crux (centre right) is a red giant star. Below Crux is the Eta Carina Nebula (pink, lower centre). These stars and nebulae form part of the band of the southern Milky Way. Photographed in August from San Pedro, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.
