The beginner will,as a rule, secure betterresults by timing de\-elop-ment by the watch than hewill by trAing to judge theappearance of the negati\e. Fig. I shows an under-exposed negati\-e clear in thedark parts or shadows withan entire absence of detail, the high lights or white parts of the subject being black, also lacking indetail. This fault is caused bv making snap shots indoors, or in the shade,or \\hen the light is weak, late in the day, or by closing the lens too soonon time exposures. Fig. 2 shows an over-exposed and over-de\eloped negative, full ofdetail but tlat, lacking all contrast and brilliancy and at the same time itlooks black or dense. Caused bv too much light. Negative develops evenly, shadows almost as fast as high lights. No contrast, and no deep shadows. If a negati\e is known to be o\-er-exposed before development is begun,it can be largely o\-ercome by the addition of bromide of potassium to the. DEVELOPMEXT. Sy developer, before de\elopmentbegins, and a bottle containingBromide of Potash, i , - - lo always be at hand whenyou are de\eloping. Use I to 4 drops for eachounce of developer accordingto amount of o\er-exposure. After the Bromide has beenadded to the developer, itshould not be used for anothernegative unless it is known tohave been over-exposed. OVER-DEVELOP-MENT. Caused by leaving thenegative too long in the de\el-oper.
