Ear anatomy. Computer artwork showing a human outer ear (centre) and eardrum (right). The outer ear consists of the pinna (large, centre) and the ear canal (external auditory meatus, centre right), which leads to the eardrum. The eardrum, or tympanic membrane, is a thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. It's function is to transmit sound from the air to the ossicles (bones) inside the middle ear.
