The Saint John's chapel ,Plougastel-Daoulas ,Finistère ,Brittany


In the XIIth century, the hospitallers of saint John of Jerusalem settled in Plougastel and built a lazaret to shelter and treat ailing people returning from the first chapel was destined to provide confort for weary travellers and injured crusaders. the present chapel (XVth century ) stands in an outstanding site, surrounded by oaks, plane trees, ash trees and beeches. It overlooks the Elorn ; its style is gothic and flamboyant. In the steeple we see an Englih bell bearing the date of 1795 (likely a war trophy) and the calvary built from Kersanton granite in the XVth century. In that place, local people celebrated one of the most popular religous festivals of the region:the Pardon of the the grace of the landlady of the manor ,families dressed up in colourful costumes would gather on its grounds to enjoy a picnic. Nowadays, neighbours otganize a bonfire every last Sunday of June to celebrate saint John (tantad sant Yann).
