A scanning electron micrograph of Salmonella typhimurium DT 104.

A scanning electron micrograph of Salmonella typhimurium DT 104, a gram-negative, motile, rod shaped bacterium. It is a food-borne pathogen which causes food poisoning, present in farm animals such as pigs, cattle, and chickens. It may be also found in hen's eggs. Salmonella typhimurium DT 104 is attracting attention from the public health authorities in the UK and the media because it is causing increasing numbers of cases of salmonellosis. Antibiotics used in husbandry make S. typhimurium resistant and, as a result, the illness is more difficult to treat.
