Morris (3) has seen a similar instance of universal eruption in anight. Some of the linear cases were surprisingly acute; thus in LICHEN PLANUS. 61 a gentleman, aged 51 years, under my care who had suffered the mostextraordinary series of personal losses, a broad band of Lichen planuswas completed from buttock to ankle within six weeks. These casesarc paralleled by others that I liave seen at our society meetings. Inseveral instances there was general illness and arthritic pain. Inone of my cases during the acute attack bullae were noted in some ofthe lesions, and Lancashire (4) reported a similar happening. Inopposition to Whitfield (5) I believe bullae indicate a severe and acuteonset. »-r. Fig. 1.—Age-incidence iu authors cases of Lichen planus. Initial lesion.—Three types may be described : (1) Plane papule, pink to blueish red; (2) acuminate papule ; (3) white papule, initialstage of Lichen planus atrophicus. (1) Planus type of lesion.—No doubt the plane papule is thecommonest manifestation of the disease. The eruption may appearin one of two forms, or these may be combined in the same patient atthe same time. (1) There may be discrete, flattened, shiny papules, of amore or less vivid red, varying from about I to 5 mm. in diameter, usually grouped together in bunches in certain favourite sites. (2)There may be numerous irregularly shaped patches which are veryslightly scaly, of a deeper blueish-red than the individual papules, and these patches may attain sizes varying from half an inch toseveral inches in extent. The patches are probably made up of 62 LICHEN PLANUS. individual papules^ the intervals between them being bridged
