RNA polymerase II. Molecular model showing the structure of the enzyme RNA polymerase II during transcription. The largest protein subunit, the DNA-directed RNA polymerase II subunit RPBI is blue. This enzyme synthesises a complementary mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) strand (orange) from a strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, yellow and pink) during a process called transcription. The RNA polymerase molecule is using the yellow DNA strand as a template for the mRNA. mRNA is the intermediary between DNA and its protein product. RNA Polymerase II complex. In Blue DNA-DIRECTED RNA POLYMERASE II SUBUNIT RPB1.
