My forecast last week of the probable reductionof the English hop area is proved by the officialreturns, just issued, to be practically correct. Iestimated our present area at about 45,000 acres,and the statement of the Board of Agriculture de-fines it as 44,938. This shows a reduction fromlast year of 1,784 acres, and from we havelost 4,029 acres, equal to more than 8 per cent. Acomparison of the present position with that often years ago is much more serious, as during thatinterval our area has diminished by nearly 6,000a:res, or about 12 per cent.
