He was quartermasterof construction in the quartermasters department in Washington during theCivil War period, after which he became interested iu railroad became heavily interested in that line of work and contracted sections ofthe Baltimore & Ohio, in Ohio, the South Mountain Road in Pennsylvania,and in 1876 built the Blairstown (New Jersey) railroad to Delaware stationfor John I. Blair. Two years later he built the Belvidere Water Works, andthe Bangor Portland railroad, a distance of eisrht miles.
