W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963), US sociologist and civil rights activist. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was the first African-American to be awarded a doctorate from Harvard (1895). He worked as a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. He was a prominent civil rights activist, a leader of the Niagara Movement and a co-founder in 1909 of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). His works included 'The Souls of Black Folk' (1903) and 'Black Reconstruction in America' (1935). He also wrote on sociology, politics and history. Photographed in around 1918 or 1919 by Cornelius Marion Battey (1873-1927).
