Its anterior surfaceis covered with a tendinous layer, called the tunica albuginca, whichis derived from the expansion of the tendons of the four recti part of the funba o uginea is covered by a mucous membrane ORGANS OF THE EXTERNAL SENSES. 191 culled the conjunctiva^ which constitutes the white of the eye. Thesclerotic forms a thin, sieve-like plate, called lamina cribrosa, at theentrance of the optic nerve ; this lamina is full of openings for the pas-sage of nervous filaments. The largest of these openings in the centreis cahVd the porus opticus, through which the arteria centralis retime—central artery of the retina—enters the eyeball. The cornea con-stitutes the anterior fifth of the globe. It is circular, transparent, andresembles a watch-glass. It is received into the grooved edge of thesclerotic in the manner that a watch-glass is received into its case. Itis composed of four layers, the external being the white membrane, orconjunctiva, before Fig. 97 is a longitudinalsection of the globe of theeye. 1. The sclerotic, thicker behind than infront. 2. The cornea, re-ceived within the anteriormargin of the sclerotic, and connected with it bymeans of a beveled The choroid, connectedanteriorly with (4) the cil-iary ligament, and (3) theciliary processes. 6. The canal of Petit, which encircles the lens (12); the thin layerin iront of this canul is the zonula ciliaris, a prolongation ot the vascular layer of theretina to the 1ms. 10. The anterior chamber of the eye, containing the aqueous humor;the lining membrane by which the humor ia secreted is represented in the diagram. posterior c
