November 2016, BRIGHTON, UK: Storm Angus cancels the Brighton 10k Road Race. As Storm ANGUS continued it's way across the South East of England, in BRIGHTON, the annual flat and fast 10 kilometer road race also fell victim to the conditions. In the early morning winds gusting to 50mph blew away the road closure barriers and cones - preventing the course from being secured from traffic. With cold air temperatures of 5 degrees centigrade Race Director Keith DONNO (of Brighton and Hove City Athletic Club) said "It is very disappointing but after discussing with the Council early this morning it was agreed that it wasn't possible to make the route safe and so we were left with no other choice". Roads along the route had suffered in the even stronger overnight gales with scaffolding collapsing and upturned bins along the streets. Even at low tide waves and spray continued to batter the costal defences of the Marina wall and the Brighton Pier. "We have already started discussions with the local Council about a different date, however I have been advised that road closures do usually require booking months in advance so we will need something very special to make that happen this year" Said Keith DONNO (Race Director). Notice of the cancellation was released at 7am across social media, with live interviews with BBC Radio 5 Live at 8:30 explaining the circumstances and situation. This proved surprisingly effective with only an handful of the 4000 entries turning up at the start line - mostly to see if there was anything they could do to help clear up. Pallets of bananas intended for the runners after the race were distributed to several local homeless hostels, hospitals and charities.
