Lanthanum. Vial containing samples of the rare earth metal Lanthanum (La). The rare earth metals, or rare earth elements, are a set of seventeen chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the fifteen lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. Lanthanum is a soft silvery-white metallic element. It has a number of applications including use in batteries for hybrid vehicles, as a flint and in carbon arc lamps.
