Houses on the main square, Plaza Mayor or Plaza de España, in Graus, a village in Ribagorça or Ribagorza county, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain. On the left is the decorated facade of the Casa Heredia, a grand ‘palace-house’ built in the mid-1700s. Most of the painted decoration, including the blue floral swags at first floor level and plant motifs at second floor level, were added to the facade in 1828. The sundial was added in 1939.

Graus, Ribagorça or Ribagorza county, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: the main square, Plaza Mayor or Plaza de España of Graus. The decorated building on the left is Casa Heredia. Casa Heredia belongs to the Heredia family and was originally built in the mid-1700s. In 1828, the paintings on the first and second floors of the facade were added. The same year, pictorial decoration of the eves was carried out by the painter Teótimo de Heredia. In 1939, the sundial on the facade was added (replacing an earlier version). In 2006, the building was completely restored and the Ribagorza Regional Council installed there. On the ground floor there are fluted painted pilasters. At first floor level, the facade is decorated with bright blue floral swags and the previously mentioned sundial, with a sun figure flanked by the letters alpha and omega. At second floor level, plant motifs predominate. Above that are high-flying concave eaves. The eaves are separated into large areas by fluted pilasters in slight relief, thus configuring frames whose upper finish, between the pilasters, comprises curved profiles. The paintings here represent the parable of the Prodigal Son. They include popular Baroque stylistic features and the characters’ clothes are a mix of biblical and contemporary. The Casa Heredia and other grand houses on the arcaded Plaza Mayor are important examples of Ribagorzan civil architecture. Graus is a village in the Spanish Pyrenees in one of the areas where the Aragonese language is still spoken. It is the administrative capital of Ribagorza county. In 1063, El Cid took part in the Battle of Graus at which the King of Aragon was killed.
