Other great dams, built to store water for irrigation purposes, arenow under construction in our Western deserts where there are nar-row canyons in the solid rock mountains. One of these, named for our. DAM SITE IN CANYON, SHOSHONE PROJECT. This dam to be 325 feet high, and only 200 feet long at the crest. 46 ex-President, Is to be two hundred and eighty feet high, but it is to bebuilt in a narrow rift in the solid rock mountains and will be only630 feet long at the top. It will probably cost three or four million dol-. lars, but it furnishes no precedent for Mr. Leightons dams, most ofwhich are to be built across wide alluvial valleys where bed rock is farbelow the surface and where the gently sloping hillsides will makethe dams of immense length at the crest.
