View of one of the semi-circular bastions at Walmer Castle, taken from the dtry Moat. A wide variety of trees are grown in the deep dry moat which encircles the Castle. Although it seems an unlikely place to grow them, they thrive in the sheltered conditions. If you look down over the bridge as you enter the castle you'll have the unusual feeling of being able to look down over the treetops. Look out for the espaliered pear trees which are still producing fruit and thought to be relatives of the original fruit trees planted here when the Duke of Wellington was appointed Lord Warden in 1829.
