The former Market Hotel in the Market Place around 1925 at the end of Sandgate, Whitby, North Yorkshire, one of the many Whitby Pubs that have vanished from the town. It was formerly known as The Bird In Hand and colloquially knonw as simply The Market. A very dark pub with many compartments, it was nearly closed down in 1904 becaue it was 'patoned up' inside and had no urinal. The landlord pictured outside of the pub may be Walter Brearly who was there from 1923-c1932. In its last days the popular pub had its walls lined with Royal Navy sailor's caps donated by local & visiting sailors.
