The designand general direction were committed to Mr Benja-min Wyatt, the architect. The excavation for the artificial foundation*, uponwhich the structure is built, was commenced in themonth of May 1830 j and the column is now com-pleted, with the exception of the figure which is to beplaced on the top, and the decorative eagles and fes-toons which are to surround the base. The column is in form about two thirds of a pyra-mid ; the base of this pyramidal portion being asquare of fifty-six feet, and its top a square of thirtyfeet.
