Such being the case the most effectual way of relieving thedeformed condition was to resort to section of the lower portion ofthe femur at McEwens line. Using as usual in such cases the perios-teum elevator devised some years ago (Fig. 1), that membrane wasraised from the bone at the seat of operation, and by means of anAdams saw the femur was divided. The small puncture in the skinwas sealed with collodion and the limbs put up in plaster of the end of the fourth week the dressings were removed and thelimbs were found to be in the condition shown in Fig. 3. There still remained in this case, after the condition of bow-legswas removed, the condition of genu recurvatum, which caused the. Fig. 8. Fig. 9. 492 DEFORMITIES child to walk in an awkward manner. We have been unable up tothe present time to persuade the friends of this orphan girl to haveanything further done for the relief of her deformity. Besides beingof interest in a clinical point of view, this case in a pathological senseillustrates one of those rare instances where elongation of the externalcondyle of the femur is the cause of the deformity. Dr. Poore in hiswork on osteotomy states that he met with one case where thisdeformity was due to lengthening of the external condyle. , in the Transactions of the Clinical Society of London, reportsone case where the trouble was due to hypertrophy of the externalcondyle.
