On myway out in the train I had passed an estate called Belmore Pen,close to Gregory Park, the first railway station from Kingston. Thehouse on this property appeared to be such a good specimen of aJamaican countiy residence that I returned on a subsequent dayto photograph it. The name pen implies a grazing farm, but fromthe number of banana trees it may be inferred that this fruit is nowthe principal product. Wishing now to see some moi^e distant part of the country,I decided to go to Mandeville, for the following reasons. The onlytwo outlying places where I had been in Jamaica were Gayle andPort Antonio, both of which lie towards the north-eastern part of theIsland. Mandeville, however, lies in a fairly central position, about. Ippigation Canal, two miles from Spanish Town and fourteen milesfrom Kingston.
