Authorized in the Flood Control Act of 1946, construction on Gathright Dam began in 1974 and completed in 1979. The dam sits about 20 miles upstream from Covington, Va., on the Jackson River in Alleghany County, Va. The intake tower allows the Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District staff to not only control the amount of flow allowed to pass by the dam downstream, but also allows the staff to control the temperature of the water by taking in water from different depths of Lake Moomaw.
