Philo Farnsworth (1906-1971), US inventor and television pioneer. Farnsworth developed the first electronic television, one which used a guided beam of electrons in a cathode ray tube. Contemporary designs relied on the mechanical Nipkow disc. His first model produced an image formed of 60 lines of phosphor, which glowed as they were hit by an electron beam. Farnsworth also filed over 150 patents for devices using vacuum tubes, radar and photoelectric technology. Photographed in Washington DC, USA, on 19th January 1939.
