. Annales du Service des antiquités de l'Egypte . ky ridge upon whichtbe tower stands, the area of whichis about 80,000 square mètres (fig. 1).The columns, etc., consist of the same stone as that which forms the hillilself, and it is clear that the n 3 tower and station of the late Transit Company [2] — IZi — and ihe tower at n q are built with fragments from the ruins in of the pedeslals of ihe columns are stiil in their original positions,Avhich were about 6 mètres apart and, in at ieast one place, hâve formeda 5o mètres colonnade, lo mètres in width. The face of the buildings wascovered with a thin layer of an exceedingly hard Avhite cernent, as will beseen on the spécimen of stone which I send to you enclosed with tbis. The remains are evidenlly of great âge, rougbly shaped and much wea-ther worn and of simple design, although the ruins on the soutb-easternportion of the ridge show signs of more artistic finish than tbose lying to thenorth-west. Gut in the rock are several openings indicating Abacus. Flg. apparently long since opened, but, as far as my examination went, thereare not any of the usual débris of bones, etc. The best fragment of cornice that I was abie to find (being unprovidedwith tools) had nine holes cul in it with some appearance of rough order(fig. 9), and other fragments bearsimilar markings. The column-shaftsvary in diameter from 0 m. 65 cent., o m. 80 cent.,0 m. 85 cent, to 0 m. go cent. Those with a groove and pierced centralboss are probably roundels to support the capitals. Some of the circular dadoes measure 1 m. A 5 cent, and are 0 m. 5 5 , but one (of many) near the tower is 1 m. 5o cent, in diameter, witha pentagonal plinth, each face of which measures o m. ()5 cent, and thecombined block is 0 m. 70 cent, deep and bas jjeen slipped ofT its penta-gonal foundation, the top of which is now on a level with the ground. Its -15- [3] central hoUow is o m. 20 cent, in diameler and 0 m. i5 cent.
