Hellebores are perennial garden plants that are grown for their winter and early spring flowers. Hellebores are excellent for bringing early colour to shady herbaceous borders and areas between deciduous shrubs and under trees. They are commonly known as the Christmas or Lenten rose, but despite these names they are not actually closely related to the Rose family. The most popular varieties for growing in the garden are H. orientalis and its colourful hybrids (H. × hybridus). These varieties flower in early spring, around the period of Lent, and are often known as Lenten hellebores, oriental hellebores, or Lenten roses. The 'Christmas rose' (H. niger) is a traditional cottage garden plant. It has white flowers that often age to pink, these flowers appear in the depths of winter, large-flowered varieties are available, as are pink-flowered and double-flowered selections.
