Whitlock Nicholl (1786-1838), English physician. Nicholl was born is Worcestershire and studied at St. Gerorge's Hospital, London. In 1809 he passed the entrance examiniation of the Royal College of Surgeons, converting to a doctor of medicine at Aberdeen. He moved to London in 1826, setting up a practice in Wimbledon. He wrote several books on medicine and theology and was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1830. For some years he was the friend and personal physician to Michael Faraday. During discussions about Faraday's experiments with electrical decomposition, it was Nicholl that proposed the terms electrode from the Greek 'electron' and 'hodos' (way), electrolysis from 'lysis' (splitting) and electrolyte meaning something that undergoes electrolysis.
