Robert Blake (1598-1657). 1864 illustration of the British military commander and politician Robert Blake. Blake was one of the most important military commanders of the Commonwealth of England and one of the most famous English admirals of the 17th century. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1640 until the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, when he began his military career on the side of the Parliamentarians (Roundheads). He is often known as the 'Father of the Royal Navy' due to his role in founding England's naval supremacy.
