His advantages of an early education werelimited, and at the age of sixteen entered the office ofthe Gospel Publisher as an apprentice to the art ofprinting. He subsequently took charge of the officeas foreman, then spent some time at Philadelphia,when returning to Harrisburg he there remaineduntil the spring of 1840. He commenced the studyof medicine with his uncle, Dr. David Shope, andbegan the practice of medicine in 1842, and upon.
