Two cut & trimmed pieces of the Idnert Early Christian (C7th) memorial stone at NW corner of rebuilt nave of St David's Church, Llanddewi-Brefi, Wales

Two cut & trimmed pieces of the Idnert Early Christian (C7th) memorial stone in the NW corner of the rebuilt nave of St David's Church, Llanddewi-Brefi, Wales, UK. The stone, described by Edward Lhuyd around 1696, records the murder of Idnert, Abbot of Llanbadarn Fawr & contains the earliest known mention of St David. A story in the C11th Life of St David says the young saint spoke with such authority & eloquence at a C6th synod here that the ground rose up beneath him. The C12th church was built on an earthen mound (possibly a Bronze Age barrow), the tower survives but the rest largely collapsed in the C18th & was rebuilt in 1874. Several Early Christian memorials from the graveyard were brought into the church at that time & the Idnert Stone cut & built into the outer wall of the new nave: less than half of the stone survives & the lower, larger piece is upside down.
